2026-03-18 · conviction; appeal upheld (final)
Krajský soud ve Zlíně (first instance); Vrchní soud v Olomouci (appeal). Priest Karel Hořák was convicted of sexually assaulting a ten-year-old girl in June 2020 inside the confessional of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Kroměříž, pulling at her shirt during confession. First-instance sentence (9 October 2025): three years' imprisonment suspended for a five-year probationary period, a seven-year ban on work with children, and 400,000 Czech crowns compensation to the victim; experts diagnosed a pedophilic disorder. The Olomouc High Court upheld the suspended sentence and the activity ban on appeal on 18 March 2026, adjusting the legal classification. Hořák denied guilt; he was suspended from pastoral duties in February 2021 and remains suspended.
Documented coercion mechanisms
- use of the sacrament of confession to gain physical proximity and privacy with the victim
- clerical/pastoral authority over a child parishioner
