Balapitiya High Court, Sri Lanka; Court of Appeal. Rev. Uduwila Sujatha, chief incumbent of a forest hermitage, was convicted of grave sexual abuse of a nine-year-old boy who was living at the temple at the time. The offences occurred in 2009; the Attorney General filed indictments only in 2019, and the Balapitiya High Court convicted and sentenced him in August 2023 to ten years' rigorous imprisonment, a Rs 20,000 fine, and Rs 200,000 compensation to the victim. The Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal against conviction and sentence on 26 May 2026, finding the defence's claimed contradictions insufficient to undermine the prosecution's case.
Documented coercion mechanisms
- monastic authority over a child resident at the temple
- status as the boy's spiritual guardian and de facto custodian within the hermitage
